Repair or Replace? How to Decide on an Aging HVAC System

Nobody plans to replace an HVAC system. The decision usually arrives on the day it stops working, which is the worst possible moment to weigh a large purchase. Thinking it through in advance puts you in a much better position.

Age is the first factor. Air conditioners and heat pumps generally last 12 to 15 years in our climate, and furnaces 15 to 20. Under about 10 years, repair is usually the right call. Past 15, you are extending equipment that owes you nothing, and the next failure is rarely far behind.

Cost is the second. A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about a third of a new system, replacement deserves serious consideration. Multiply the repair cost by the age of the unit — if the result substantially exceeds the price of new equipment, replacing is the better use of the money.

Then there are the signals that tip the scale on their own. A failed compressor is usually decisive. An obsolete refrigerant makes every future repair more expensive and harder to source. Rising energy bills with no change in usage mean you are already paying for the replacement in monthly increments. And three service calls in two years is a pattern, not bad luck.

There is a case for repair too. If the system was correctly sized and installed, has been maintained, and needs one clearly identified part, fixing it is straightforward. Good ductwork and a sound install are worth preserving.

What we will not do is quote a replacement when a repair will genuinely serve you, or patch a system that is going to fail again next month. You get the comparison, and you make the call.
